I used to be pretty intelligent. Graduated from university. Had a job that required a bit of brains, and dare I say…I was pretty good at it🙄 In short, I think I was a little above average in the IQ department, with the same score for both verbal and non-verbal IQ, in every test I ever did. But then I had a little bump on the noggin, and all of a sudden; I suck at maths, forget words and get confused following simple conversations. I take longer to understand and do things, but does that make me stupid? I guess it does…that’s why IQ tests have to be completed in a specific time period. A couple of years ago, I would have labelled someone like myself as a “special” person, that required more attention than normal people do.

But now, standing on the other side, and getting a different perspective, I have to admit I might have been an ignorant, stupid bitch. Sure I take longer to grasp and understand some things, but I am capable…. just a little slower than usual. I have come to notice, that people really close to me, sometimes act in a condescending manner, laughing and treating me, as if I’m “special”….a bit slow…a bit retarded. And that’s my Karma and I accept it as that…but they’re wrong though. What I do know is that my whole philosophy on life changed. It happens when you not only touch death, but cuddle it for a while. It made me realise that sometimes people are not stupid or incapable, but only slower than others. It made me realise that people are fighting battles that others can’t see, and that I have no right to judge the lady at the grocer till, because she might be in a bad mood…maybe she is worrying about her sick boy in bed at home, or the fight she had this morning with her abusive partner etc. It made me realise that we should never judge a book by its cover. Sometimes, people like me for instance, look perfectly normal, but underneath my skull, there is a whole lot of damage and scars, causing me to not be as normal.

This is not secret or privileged info, but people who life privileged lives (like I used to), tend not to comprehend the above. Karma, a significant force that we tend to make menial with catchy phrases and sayings. The last couple of years has been an education of sorts about the power of Karma, and also some undeniable truths. Like every action has an equal reaction and the freedom of choice. I have the freedom to react in any way to negative or positive actions and who knows…that rude checkout girl’s reaction to my positive action (even if her initial action was rude), might be a smile and a lighter mood, resulting in her treating the next customer with a better attitude, who might be having a shitty day…and so on and so on. The other most important truth that I try to remember with every single choice I make in life is this: YOU GET, WHAT YOU GIVE. Whatever you give, will come back to you in life whether it be aggression, compassion, sympathy, greed etc. With no religious intentions whatsoever….in the end, we all reap what we sowed…

So I get it. I can understand that those close to me, perceive me as someone a bit slow or special. I transformed from a Type A, take-no-shit, driven bitch to a Type B, free-loving-hippy, chilled artist. It’s strange and not easy to accept from someone you have known your whole life, but it is, what it is 😉 we all get what we give – but in the end, we have the power to choose what we receive.

I sometimes wonder…Have I become someone that’s a bit on the special side?
